Dear Karen and Kevin,

I’m an avid movie collector. I have over 3000 DVDs, BluRays and even some LaserDiscs. But I’m finding it harder and harder to separate the art from reality. What I mean to say is that it’s hard to enjoy a classic flick with Sly Stallone, knowing that he’s a Trump supporter or a film with anti-vaxxers like Evangeline Lilly or Rob Schneider. Should I start tossing discs or just try and focus on the performances rather than the performers?

Kevin: Well, Santiago, I think I can speak for everyone when I say that Rob Schneider knows how to tickle the funny bone! But that doesn’t make him a doctor. My life partner Karen doesn’t allow me to watch most films from the 90s, but if I were you I’d pop some popcorn and put my feet up my personal politics and just enjoy the talents that even anti-vaxxers clearly bring to the table.

Karen: They certainly won’t be welcome at our table, Kevin. (Not that I cook, as cooking is rooted in misogyny and is a legacy of slavery.) Stallone, Schneider and Lilly are all prime examples of what’s wrong with Hollywood that is unable to move on from the white hegemony and nepotism that LaLa land is steeped in. I don’t know what race you are, Santiago, but you need to check your white privilege. After that you need to collect all DVDs featuring these despicable plague rats and glue them to your ceilings and walls so that you can reflect on your past poor choices ALL THE TIME. Also, Laser discs are classist. You need to sell them immediately and donate the money to struggling LGBTQ2++ directors so they can make films that dismantle the obviously elitist and thus unfair advantage over BIPOC minorities you have been gifted by your unbelievable, entitled whiteness.
